Spyware is a relatively new menace on the internet. The two biggest concerns with spyware is that they hog computer resources, and give away information about you and your computer activities.
Early Spyware was easy to remove, and quite easy to avoid, but today the designers of these programs are utilizing tricks used by virus writers to make these program just about invisible and almost impossible to remove once they have a foothold on your computer.
There is actually three forms of Spyware, usually they are all cataloged under the one name:
1.) Spyware - Records information and reports it back to it's creator. (Identity theft anyone!)
2.) Adware - Monitors web activities and "Pops-up" browser windows of their clients. (Annoying but generally harmless.)
3.) BHO and Toolbars - BHO and Toolbars change homepages, modify search choices, and generally control all aspects of your web experience. (I see these as the worst of the worst as far as spyware goes.)
For the record any piece of spyware could exhibit any, if not all of these behaviors with BHO's generally being the hardest to remove because of their unique way of being "hooked" (loaded) on the computer. (Coolwebsearch is a BHO, and is considered one of the hardest spyware to remove.)
